More than a singer, Davide Van De Sfroos – who was actually born Davide Bernasconi – sees himself as a storyteller, much like Woody Guthrie who travelled the United States during the Great Depression, relaying the events of people’s everyday lives. Since the 1990s, Van De Sfroos’ songs – which are often sung in the laghèe dialect – have become synonymous with Como, where he lives. Another of his passions is writing – he has four books on the go. His best tip as an Ambassador? “The tiny beach next to the Tempio Voltiano: the reflections on the water are just unique.”

I LIKE COMO BECAUSE
Como is Como. A town on the banks of a lake that protects it. It can fill even the most distracted traveller with a sense of harmony to which nobody can remain indifferent. When you enter the medieval towers for the first time, you want to experience arriving from the other side too. So you go down a path packed with such history and beauty that it touches your very soul.

MUST-SEE MASTERPIECE
The one real masterpiece that you cannot miss in Como is the lake itself. Before you can even admire everything that man has created, the lake appears in its fabulous location, surrounded by mountains.

HIDDEN GEM
It’s tough to keep something secret in Como, but I’ll go for the tiny beach near the Tempio Voltiano, which has a great view north of the first part of the lake. It’s like a balcony that brings views of the water and the mountains into the urban environment.

THE MUSEUM I’D VISIT 1000 TIMES
I think the Museo Storico Giuseppe Garibaldi is a very evocative, moving place to visit. It features relics from the Risorgimento movement and possessions of the Hero of the Two Worlds himself.

THE PERFECT INSTAGRAM SHOT
A great shot is the medieval houses that still stand in Piazza S. Fedele. It’s one of the main hubs of the town, where four roads come together. There you can capture an image that combines past and present to great effect.

A WALK WITH FRIENDS
I would recommend the walk from the town to Villa Olmo along the lake. And maybe a visit to the Villa’s park too!

BEST PLACE TO CATCH THE SUNSET
If you’re in Como and want to see the perfect sunset, simply head up to Brunate and take a seat under the lighthouse. It’s often overlooked but is definitely worth making the most of…

THE TASTIEST DISH
It’s tough to choose one dish and call it my absolute favourite – it would be wrong, in fact. But I think risotto with perch, cooked just the right way and enjoyed on the shores of the lake, is a good bet.

BEST PIAZZA FOR A PRE-DINNER DRINK
Why not enjoy a drink sat at a nice table in the square in front of the architectural wonder that is the Duomo, with the Torre del Brolleto beside it?

JOURNEY BACK THROUGH HISTORY
The whole town is great for discovering – or rediscovering – history, but one thing you have to do is climb the Castello Baradello tower. As well as taking you on a journey through the nature and the past, when you get to the top you have a panoramic view which conjures up images of Como as it once was.

LOOK TO THE FUTURE
I like thinking about the future in Piazza del Popolo, with one eye on the Duomo and the other on Palazzo Terragni, which is known around the world as an example of rationalist architecture. That way you get to look at the modern era without forgetting the past.

AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED
The Palio del Baradello medieval procession has stayed alive through the years and is still a fascinating event to this day. It really does transport both participants and spectators to another place and time.

A GIANT OF THE PAST
Our giant of the past has his own square dedicated to him. You cannot fail to notice the statue to Alessandro Volta, just as his scientific discoveries did not go unobserved. It’s a great statue, but the man himself was even greater.

A SOUVENIR
Head to Piazza Cavour and browse the souvenir shops, buying postcards, mini wooden boats, miniature Duomos and weird thermometers and ashtrays. We all know that our real souvenir of a town lies in the way we live the experience on a personal level.

IF COMO WERE A PIECE OF MUSIC
I don’t know why, but ever since I was a child I’ve always thought there to be a mysterious connection between Como and Let It Be. I’m sure The Beatles weren’t thinking about Como when they wrote it, but I do – every time I hear it.

TIP FOR A TRIP OUT OF THE TOWN
Just a few kilometres from Como is the town of Torno, which is well worth a visit. From there, you can walk up to Montepiatto, a place where time seems to have stood still. That’s my top tip for a trip.
