An icon of Italian cooking revered around the world, Enrico Derflingher was just 27 years old when he became the private chef of the British royal family, an honour usually reserved for the greats of French cuisine. Since then, his career has been laden with prizes and success, including appointment by the European Association of Chefs’ Euro Toques International, which is the only body working to uphold the quality of food to be officially recognised by the European Commission. Born in Lecco in 1962, Derflingher is also a Cult City Ambassador for his hometown. So what’s his favourite dish? “Rice with perch,” he says. Let’s get the lowdown from the star chef..

I LIKE LECCO BECAUSE
It’s a quiet, welcoming city, but the famed industriousness of its inhabitants means that it’s always changing.

A MASTERPIECE NOT TO BE MISSED
The beautiful Lecco skyline, made up of a thousand tiny details.

A SECRET PLACE
The point at which “the lake ends, and the Adda again begins…” (The Betrothed, chapter one), which is Pescarenico, an old fishing village with narrow streets, colourful houses packed in tightly and a lovely, quiet square.

THE MUSEUM I’D VISIT 1.000 TIMES
The Palazzo delle Paure. Every time you go, you discover something new about Lecco’s mountaineering traditions. I’m in awe of the great mountaineers who explored the frontiers of the world, not least Riccardo Cassin, who was awarded the Gold Medal for athletic merit in 1938.

AN INSTAGRAMMER’S DREAM
The city as seen from the lake at any time of day or night. It’s a wonderful view. The mountains frame the city, with its palazzos, its alleyways, the Matitone and all the trappings of daily life on the water and in the mountains.

A WALK WITH FRIENDS
You can’t beat the classic lakefront – it’s worth going on a long walk just for some of the viewpoints. Early in the morning, it’s the perfect place for a jog or dog walk.

WHERE TO CAPTURE THE SUNSET
It has to be the lakefront again, but there are some wonderful panoramic lookout points and terraces along the roads to the mountains around Lecco.

THE TASTIEST DISH
You can’t look past the quintessential Lecco dish: rice (not risotto) with perch. It’s a dish that deserves greater recognition.

THE BEST PIAZZA FOR APERITIF
Piazza XX Settembre, the old market square. It’s the heart of Lecco. It’s lovely to relax at one of the bars with the tables outside. Piazza Cermenati is another good tip.

WHERE TO DISCOVER HISTORY
The Museo Storico e Naturalistico at Palazzo Belgioioso. It houses original documents, photographs, letters, paintings, posters and prints documenting the contemporary history of Lecco and the surrounding area. It is also home to the only Lariosaurus to have been found in Lecco. And in the adoptive hometown of Alessandro Manzoni, you can’t afford to miss out on a visit to Villa Manzoni, which houses the Museo Manzoniano and the Galleria Comunale d’Arte.

WHERE TO LOOK AT THE FUTURE
No matter where you go in the city, you can feel both the culture of times gone by and the desire to discover, to experiment, to put forward new ideas. When you enter Lecco by the Kennedy Bridge, you are able to gaze deep into the Alps, yours eyes drawn inexorably towards the horizon.

AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED
I really love the Bike UP event which is held every spring and celebrates the electric bike. I think it’s an important event in terms of environmental sustainability and a fitting one given that the beautiful countryside around Lecco is perfect for exploring.

A GIANT OF THE PAST
It has to be Alessandro Manzoni, or Renzo and Lucia, the characters he created in The Betrothed – the most famous love story in the history of Italian literature. Aside from him, I’ve had the honour of meeting Riccardo Cassin in person.

A SOUVENIR
A “Lucia”, the traditional boats found on the lake.

IF IT WERE A SONG
It would be “Paradise” by Coldplay.

FOR A ONE-DAY TRIP
If you’re into nature, I recommend the “I piani d’Erna” just above Lecco. If culture is more your thing, I would advise you to have lunch on the lake then visit the historic Villa Monastero in Varenna or the Basilica di San Pietro al Monte di Civate. It’s a masterpiece of Lombard Romanesque architecture and is an easy one-hour walk away.
