The capital city of Valtellina, Sondrio is surrounded by nature and full of secrets to be discovered at a leisurely pace. Who can better describe it than the Ladiesgang, a concentrate of female talent who took their first steps to success precisely from Sondrio, and whose music style is inspired by the pleasant atmosphere of 1940s Italian swing. A mix of passion, music, lightness and love of life. “Why we like our city? Because it’s women-friendly”. Spoken like true Ambassadors.

I LIKE SONDRIO BECAUSE
We like Sondrio because it’s a women-friendly city, where you can work, raise your children and have time for yourself. It’s a small city where landscape and smiles blend with the air of the mountains, nature, sports, culture and good food…

A MASTERPIECE NOT TO BE MISSED
The Salone dei Balli (Ballroom) on the first floor of Palazzo Sertoli, in Baroque style. A little jewel of a building on two floors, with delightful balconies, lavishly decorated with frescoes depicting perspectives of architectures rich in swirls and faux stucco. A feast for the eyes.

A SECRET PLACE
The courtyard of Palazzo Pretorio, surrounded by a portico decorated with motifs made with the “grey scratch” technique. It’s a quiet recess with great acoustics.

THE MUSEUM I’D VISIT 1.000 TIMES
The MVSA (Valtellinese History and Art Museum). Here the works of educated painters, like those from the Fund of the Valtellina Ligari family of painters, coexist with those of popular artists. It feels like delving into our past, our traditions: it warms our heart, time after time…

AN INSTAGRAMMER’S DREAM
Looking at the Masegra Castle from the Mallero bridge at sunset… An indescribable experience.

A WALK WITH FRIENDS
An ascent among the vineyards. Starting from Trippi, climb up to Castel Grumello: from here you can enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire valley. To go back to Sondrio, continue through Montagna in Valtellina and follow the road to Ponchiera, where we suggest a short stop to admire the city from above.

WHERE TO CAPTURE THE SUNSET
From the top of Monte Rolla, with its incredibly spacious view: the Bernina group, the Pizzo Scalino and the Corna Mara, Ortler and Adamello groups, the Prealpi and the entire Valtellina from Mazzo all the way to the Lake. A tip? Sit, wait for the sunset and breathe Life.

THE TASTIEST DISH
A tough choice… Better to suggest a menu for a whole meal. Start with an appetizer of bresaola and slinzega, continue with sciatt and salad, a taste of taroz, and end with the ubiquitous pizzoccheri! And… a glass of Amaro Braulio to help digestion!

THE BEST PIAZZA FOR APERITIF
Piazza Garibaldi, the most elegant square in town, is lined with restaurants and cafés facing the great General’s statue. Or you can choose Piazza Campello, Piazza Cavour or the recently renovated Piazzale Bertacchi.

WHERE TO DISCOVER HISTORY
A centuries-old route, the Sentiero Rusca, also known as “Via del Muretto” because it takes to the Passo del Muretto (2,562 m asl), the gateway between Valtellina and Engadina. Wonderful scenery, mountain architecture, and structures dedicated to worship all remind us of life in the mountains, of our rural culture and traditions. And, for the most part, it is suitable for mountain biking!

WHERE TO LOOK AT THE FUTURE
It was an honour for us to sing on the stage of the Teatro Sociale, built in 1824 upon a design by architect Luigi Canonica. The theatre was closed for many years and was reopened in 2015. A special place where music, art and culture meet and take flight.

AN EVENT NOT TO BE MISSED
Sondrio Festival: the international show of documentaries on parks. A week during which the city presents the best international productions made in natural parks and protected areas around the world. Great guests and excitement galore! Be sure not to miss the “Wine Trail”, a 42 km run through the terraces and the wine cellars of the valley… Simply unique!

A GIANT OF THE PAST
Teresina Tua Quadrio, one of the greatest late 19th century Italian violinists. A woman and a musician: she is like one of us, the Ladiesgang! She chose Valtellina as her home and demonstrated her deep affection by donating to the city of Sondrio Villa Quadrio, now seat of the Civic Library, and leaving many bequests to the parish church of the Saints Gervasius and Protasius.

A SOUVENIR
A bottle of wine – made from Nebbiolo Chiavennasca grapes of course. Grown with passion and effort on the characteristic terraces created by our ancestors to make the most of the limited land available and the warmth of the sun, this variety gives the palate the flavors of DOCG wines like Sassella, Grumello, Inferno and, for “meditation”, the Sforzato made from dried grapes.

IF IT WERE A SONG
It would be “Bella” (Beautiful) by Jovanotti: “… warm like bread, shade under a pine tree… Beautiful like a morning of crystal clear water, like a window that brightens up my pillow … “. Beautiful!

FOR A ONE-DAY TRIP
After a visit to the historic centre of Morbegno, we recommend continuing towards the Val Gerola, to discover the origins of one of our traditional delicacies: the Bitto cheese. A journey into nature and the real flavours of our land.
